The forgetting curve, hypothesized by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, shows how memory retention declines over time if there is no attempt to retain it.

Spaced repetition solves this by scheduling review sessions right when you are about to forget. Reviewing spacing intervals (e.g. 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days) flattens the forgetting curve, transferring knowledge into long-term memory.
