Test anxiety can cause your mind to go blank during critical moments. When you perceive an exam as a threat, your brain triggers the fight-or-flight response, redirecting blood flow away from the prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for memory retrieval and logical thinking.

To manage this anxiety:

  • Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. Repeat 3 times before the exam to calm your nervous system.
  • Cognitive Reappraisal: Reframe the physiological signs of stress (racing heart, sweaty palms) as excitement and preparation rather than fear.
  • Simulation: Take timed, realistic practice tests. The more familiar the exam environment feels, the less threat your brain perceives.
