The Leitner box system is a classic method of spaced repetition developed by German science journalist Sebastian Leitner in the 1970s. It uses card boxes to schedule review sessions based on how well you know each item.

How it works:

  • Box 1: Cards you review every day.
  • Box 2: Cards you review every 3 days.
  • Box 3: Cards you review every 5 days.
  • Box 4: Cards you review every 14 days.

All cards start in Box 1. If you answer a card correctly, it moves to the next box. If you answer incorrectly, it goes back to Box 1 immediately. This ensures you spend the majority of your time studying difficult items while avoiding wasting time on things you already know.
