How to Read a Textbook with the SQ3R Method

Reading a textbook cover-to-cover passively is highly inefficient. The SQ3R method is a structured framework for active reading:
- Survey: Scan the headings, charts, and summaries of the chapter.
- Question: Turn headings into questions (e.g. 'Photosynthesis' becomes 'How does photosynthesis work?').
- Read: Read actively to find the answers to your questions.
- Recite: Orally summarize what you read in your own words.
- Review: Periodically review the key points and questions.
